been grinding on the 990s for 2 months, i still prefer the em6ls + divinus velvets wide, sounds more complete.

They do sound more colored if you have standards. Cope harder. Many black edition beyers are known for sounding totally different in tuning. This is more subtle but still more colored.

Rode made the same claim vs NT1 4th and 5th Gen. They lied.
 
could be placebo but spoken word immediately sounds more pleasant on fresh silver
 
Do you think it's worth trying the dt990s If I already have a pair of Edition XSs and am going to EQ them anyway?

I dont think you can fix the treble cut on these types of headphones with eq. Velour pads would prob fix the upper mid 2khz dip problem on edition xs:

Worn pads dt990 won't need eq and sound good on its own after a few months or toilet paper mod:

These dekoni pads look pretty good for edition xs still subtle 10khz cut but i think this isnt too bad:

Thanks for the info. I think I'll order a pair of the dekoni pads and get the dt990s next time there's a sale since I'd like to have an extra pair of headphones anyway. Especially since my only current pair is a hifiman lol

Im actually going to get dekoni pads for my dt990 as well. Bass boost will sound godly probably maybe lol.

I got a good deal on a slightly used pair and they should arrive sometime next week. What's the best current method for breaking in dt990s? Should I use the stock pads with the TP mod or use the Soulwit pads and put something like books on top of the stock pads to compress them?

I use old worn pads cause it is brighter and airier than soulwit. I like sparkle and shimmer. Honestly it still has a detectable 6khz peak to some degree and small amount of coloration around 4khz but not that bad. If toiletpaper isn't good enough for you then soulwit will do it.
 
First impressions and yea they are amazing. I had a cope EQ for my Edition XS with about 15 bands trying to fix the treble and these sound better out of the box lmao. Here is a Pic of dt990s I bought them used but idk if you would call the pads worn yet or not. Also the EQ that you made for these makes them sound even better:

Pre-Amp:-10
Freq 20 Gain 10 Q 0.4
Freq 175 Gain -2 Q 0.5
Freq 10000 Gain -3 Q 0.7 (High Shelf Filter)

I will probably sell the XS and buy another pair these are insane

I tried the soulwit pads but I'm not a fan. Dampens the treble too much imo. Worn pads definitely the way to go
 
switching back from soulwit to new pads is causing whiplash. asmr sounds great tho maybe better.
