Endgame Beyerdynamic DT770 / DT880 / DT990 (Endgame) / Pro 250 Ohm

Hi, I am looking at the DT990, but what would you recommend instead? I cant spend too much as this would be my first audiophile grade headphone ever. Looking to spend sub $300, but ideally sub $200, because with a dac/amp the price will add up quickly, thanks!
I'm in the professional audio space, so the DT 990 Pros didn't work for me, due to the peaky treble and insufficient bass and high distortion, but for a casual listener, it is probably enough, so I would just order it and see if you like it or not.

Casual listeners are also a big fan of the Sony MDR-7506. So I think that's another one worth checking out. If you can, just order both and return the one you don't like.

Other than those two, there really isn't anything else worth checking out in that price range, in my opinion. You're better off just getting the Simgot EM6L's, but they are IEM's, not headphones.

I see, thank you for your reply. I will order those on prime day and see which suits my needs.

Since you are in the pro audio space, im not sure if you have had much experience with dongle dac/amps but assuming I get the DT990 pro, do you think something like a moondrop dawn pro would be sufficient as a source? or is it better to go with a desktop dac/amp like the topping dx1. From my understanding neither the dac or amp should color the sound at all but people claim headphones sound vastly different and also have narrower sound stages on cheaper sources but im not sure if this is true or not.

Thanks again~!

I don't have as much experience with DACs or AMPs other than the audio interfaces I've used and a Tanchjim DAC/amp dongle, that was like $90 or something. However, I would recommend the Qudilex 5K or its bigger brother, the T71. They're the ones that ****** uses and recommends. They have both balanced and unbalanced inputs and they both have built-in EQ, so you could download the filters from ***** and apply them in the unit through the app, I think. Since I pretty much only ever do audio work or listening on my laptop, I just use my audio interface (Motu M2) and Equalizer APO to apply the filters.

i had a pair of the black dt 770s and my pads never compressed after wearing them probably 3000+ hours to the point where the pads were separating, unless this is something specific to the grey pads. if u need to wear them so long wont u just need to replace them at that point?

Great autistic first post.

so i have to buy 990s and then wait for them to basically be falling apart before they sound good yea?
or get em6l for immediate upgrade

Just tried these for the first time, this is the sound I've been chasing since I got into this bs. I usually trust what ASR has to say, but what the fuck are they talking about in the review of these? and every one else crying about the treble? I'm genuinely so confused. This is the best treble I've heard in a headphone, and this is with fresh pads. I just wish it had more sub-bass and less distortion prone drivers. They are so much better than the Moondrop Cosmo (my latest headphone, thanks a lot ****** lol) its not even funny. I wonder how they'll do with *****.

I can't believe the money I've spent chasing this sound.

Nice, yeah, I have no problem recommending these to a casual listener. Unfortunately, adding the sub-bass significantly limits the output capability of an already SPL-limited headphone due to distortion. I think the pair I owned also had a fairly big discrepancy between the frequency response of the left and right drivers, and this became a lot more apparent at louder volumes. So I guess the solution to both of these problems is to just listen at lower volumes.

Any headphones that have this treble but can be EQ'd without distortion?

Because I want subbass and volume? Lmao
No open back dynamic driver headphone has a beefy sub bass or the ability to do it. Altho if you boost the dt990 sub bass it will add a lot of rumble, it's a waste of time like trying to boost the sub bass on a medium sized speaker. Just assume a open back isn't going to have a prominent sub bass just like you wouldn't assume that of most speakers that aren't huge. if you can't accept this you're just concern trolling cause you have no life.

Regarding the DT990, for hygiene reasons, is there any maintenance in terms of cleaning before or after the two month wear down period for the earpads? As in should they be regularly cleaned on a daily/weekly/monthly basis or just wear them down and replace them?

did I missed the post or nobody mentioned the dt770 ?

Is the dt770 the same as the DT 990 250ohm? I mean I've seen that it's a close back but it's in the title so that got me confused

...yes I have post already but I think would be nice to have a list

... sure the dt990 is endgame as the em6l is; but where is like the other 9 over ear next best headphones and the other 9 next best iems. U feel me, niggers?! options bruh options

DT770 is the closed back version of DT990. they are the same driver and overall design. DT770 has worse tonality due to it having reflections throughout the closed earcup. Coloration is considerable due to closed back design. I tried 250ohm and 80ohm DT770. Both too colored sounding to be worth using. EM6L is a better option for sound isolation, sub bass performance, and overall sound quality.
